The medieval townscape and the basilica create a landscape where faith and art are fused together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reasons for being registered as a World Heritage Site<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>UNESCO values the Basilica of San Francesco and Related Heritage in Assisi as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Criterion (i)<\/strong>The architecture of the Basilica of San Francesco and its frescoes, including those by Giotto, are masterpieces in the history of European art and architecture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Criterion (ii)<\/strong>The significant role that Assisi played in the spread of Franciscan thought and art throughout Italy and Europe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Criterion (iii)<\/strong>It is the only and most unique evidence that conveys the faith and history of Christianity, especially the Franciscan Order.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Criterion (iv)<\/strong>It is an outstanding example of a medieval pilgrimage city where religious architecture and religious practices are seamlessly integrated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Criteria (vi)<\/strong>The figure of Saint Francis is strongly associated with universal values such as peace, poverty, and reverence for nature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The trinity of faith, art, and urban landscape was recognized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The History of Saint Francis and Assisi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Francis was born the son of a wealthy merchant in Assisi. After his conversion, he chose a life of poverty and preaching, and founded the Franciscan Order. After his death, construction of a church was undertaken as an object of veneration, and in the 13th century, two churches, an upper and an upper, and a bell tower were completed. The lower church contains frescoes by Cimabue and Simone Martini, while the upper church contains frescoes depicting the life of Saint Francis by Giotto, making it known as a treasure trove of Italian painting. The lower hall is a dimly lit and solemn space, while the upper hall is brightly lit and adorned with frescoes. Please follow the rules, such as the no-photography rule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Santa Chiara Basilica<\/strong>This chapel, dedicated to Saint Clare, a comrade of Francis, is located on the western edge of town.
