Originally called Place Louis XV, it was an urban feature symbolizing the majesty of the French monarchy. However, after the French Revolution in 1789, the place was renamed Place de la R\u00e9volution and its political significance changed dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1793, the executions of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette took place in this square. This public execution by guillotine was an event that symbolized the establishment of civil society and the collapse of the old regime.
